We invite all students to be considered for a student award. The following policy is in place for the Congress.
MODSIM09 Student Awards Policy
All student presentations will be evaluated by either the session organiser or at least one member of the student awards committee and on the basis of these evaluations, commendations will be awarded to the best student presentations. No less than 5% and no more than 15% of students will be awarded commendations. The commendation will take the form of a certificate and a cash reward.
Students awarded commendations will be selected on the basis of the quality of their presentations in the following manner:
- After registrations have closed, the list of student presentations will be extracted from the WCMT database.
- Prior to the MODSIM09 Congress, session organisers will be e-mailed a list of students in their session and asked to evaluate them for student awards.
- Student presentations which are unable to be evaluated by session organisers due for example to a conflict of interest (being a supervisor or co-author on the paper) will be evaluated by at least one member of the student awards committee.
- Members of the student awards committee will also evaluate any student presentations that they attend. This will serve as a check on session organisers evaluations.
- Student evaluation sheets will be available for collection from and return to a box at the registration desk and will be provided to session organisers prior to the conference.
- On the basis of these evaluation sheets, no less than 5% and no more than 15% of student presentations will be selected to receive commendations.
- The percentage of students receiving awards in each of the Streams will lie between 5% and 15%.
Notes:
- The student must be the first author on the paper. If owing to disciplinary practice (eg. economics), this is not the case, students are asked notify the chair of the Student Awards Committee.
- The definition of a student is anyone who has registered as a student through WCMT.
- Students who have submitted their thesis (honours, masters or PhD) in the past six months are also eligible but they must notify the chair of the Student Awards Committee as early as possible.
