D5. Fleet management

Fleet Management in the military context may be understood as activities that lead to the optimal management of all aspects of a fleet (of maritime vessels, land vehicles and systems or aircraft as well as the personnel to operate and maintain them) throughout its life. This includes designing effective fleets (size, mix, workforce etc), inventories, supply chains and other support systems; measuring effectiveness and performance of a fleet and its support systems; solving resource allocation problems such as the scheduling of missions to maximise rate of effort, platform availability or other parameters; enhancing maintenance practices of extant and future fleets; maximising spares availability and minimising logistics delays.
